YouthNPower Housing Demands

YouthNPower Housing Demands

UNITE! Housing Platform Launch. YouthNPower: Transforming Care is building power with allies at the Coalition for Homeless Youth and launched the project partnership UNITE to transfer power to young people and to hold systems accountable to dismantle the silos and fill the gaps that perpetuate the intersection of the child welfare system and

youth homelessness. We envision a reality where the current systems in power:

  • Are held accountable for the harm that they have caused young people.
  • Must be transformed by giving equitable decision-making power to those who have been directly impacted.
  • Must center the voices and ideas of young people by giving them the support and resources they need to establish their own futures.

Read our multi-year organizing platform here for a new vision for housing in New York City that we released in May 2023. This work has been led by Grace Tatom, Embraia Fraizer, Amal Kharoufi, Christine Joseph, Jose Perez and Julia Davis.

Action to Increase the NY Child Welfare Housing Subsidy. In March 2023 members of the YouthNPower: Transforming Care Collective shared powerful testimonies about the need for stable housing for those aging-out of foster care in New York to advance demands in Albany around increasing the state’s child welfare housing subsidy.  Our team included T’Coy Adams, Mya Martinez, Amal Kharoufi, Shauntay Mayfield and Christine Joseph. The campaign led by partners and advocates across New York State was successful and the legislature increased the stipend from $300 to $725 per month.

Action in NYC! Testimony before City Council on Housing Vouchers for Youth. In January 2023, Christine Joseph, Amal Kharoufi, Mica Baum-Tucillo, Jose Perez and Julia Davis testified at New York City Council calling for legislative action to ensure young people have access to CityFHEPS housing vouchers.
